S2 Ep24: Five lessons I’ve learnt in 2020

What a year it has been. 2020 has been a year like no other. A year we will remember in years to come for so many reasons.

We have suffered loss, faced numerous challenges and setbacks, as well as experienced inspirational moments and joy…all bundled into 12 extraordinary months.

I wanted to share what I have learned over the past year. The things that have resonated with me the most. The things that have inspired me the most. Taking time to reflect is always beneficial, for me at least. It allows me to take stock, learn and grow.

There have been of course, many moments, events, lessons that I have been inspired by and caused me pause for thought. But these 5 things were the ones that resonated with me the most.

People are highly adaptable

The way we had to adapt to a new way of living, was challenging. Social distancing, no shaking hands or hugging, can’t go out to restaurants…all the usual daily stuff we took for granted was no longer permissible. Remote working became the norm, and not wearing PPE (personal protective equipment) was no longer an option.

Health care workers are amazing

Health care workers showed up this year. They went above and beyond their normal duties. They risked their own lives to help others. They made sacrifices. They were tired, scared, and at times felt isolated. And yet, they still went into work, despite the constant threat of the virus ever-present.

Kindness of strangers

This was evident throughout the year. The generosity and kindness of people was heartwarming. You’d hear so many stories of things that people do to help others in need. I experienced this at work. People would drop off food, treats, make us face masks and scrubs. Complete strangers being kind to others, without wanting anything in return. Amazing.

Resilience

The pandemic has affected us all in so many ways. For those who have been diagnosed with a medical condition, and have had their treatment canceled, postponed, altered…must have been really tough. People have lost loved ones, jobs, livelihoods…people have lost so much. And yet, the show of strength, resilience, and fortitude has been awe-inspiring.

Resourcefulness

The brilliant scientists have been able to develop several vaccines in record-breaking time. The UK was the first country in the world to approve the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine. This was developed within 10 months, as opposed the normal 10 years. Mind blowing! When there is urgency coupled with a huge collaborative effort, anything is possible.

So, those were the 5 lessons I have learnt over the past 12 months.

Let’s embrace 2021 with hope and optimism.
